Gardening Mistakes That Can Limit Your Garden’s Potential

Many people start gardens with a great deal of enthusiasm, but don’t take all of the variables into account. It is important for everyone that has a garden to avoid certain mistakes that could jeopardize their efforts. Never assume things will just work. You need to know, for instance, how much water your garden will need and exactly where you should plant so that it can flourish.

If you want your plants to be healthy and thrive, you have to give them the amount of space they require. When you are deciding which plants you want to grow, find out how much room each variety requires so you can choose a proper location. When you your bedding plants, their small size can be deceptive and it’s easy to misjudge exactly how much room they will require when full grown. Tangled roots are just one of the problems that can happen when plants are not spaced a sufficient distance from one another. Don’t try to cram a bunch of different plants into your garden if your space is restricted. Plant just a few varieties or research container gardening if you want more plants. Strawberries and herbs, for example, flourish well in containers. Any seed packet or plant that you buy will tell you how much space is required, and you should always follow these recommendations. With experience you will learn that certain seeds require certain depths at which they should be planted. This one factor can prevent your plants from growing properly. In order for your plant to grow to fruition, the most important thing you need to do is to plant at the appropriate level in the soil; regardless of the soil and compost make up. When a seed is planted too shallow, it fails to receive the nourishment that is provided by the soil. When you cover your seed with too much soil, your seed may not get the required amount of sun to sprout, or may end up getting too much water. In general, the drier the soil and the local climate is, the deeper you should plant your seeds. The bigger the actual seed is; the further down it will need to go. Always go by the recommended planting instructions when they are available.

Using poor quality soil is a gardening mistake that can spell doom for your garden before you even get started. It just makes sense that your garden plants will be healthier if your soil is healthy. Do a test on the pH of your soil before you even begin planting. This will tell you if your soil is alkaline or acid. You can purchase kits to test your soil at any gardening center or online. The remedies for unhealthy soil include adding fertilizer or whatever chemicals are needed to bring it into balance. Aside from that, you can buy a load of good garden soil from local sources. To ensure your plants are well fed, set up a schedule of fertilization or composting. This will replace the nutrients in the soil that have been removed by watering or by the plants themselves. With proper planning, you can avoid the type of mistakes we’ve discussed in this article. Never second guess such things like where to plant your seeds, or how much light or water is needed; this could be harmful. When in doubt, simply consult the internet or get answers from your plant store. Never generalize plant care and growth; they all have their own specific and individualized needs.
